Dos:
- Prepare your personal stories in advance. Instead of repeating your CV, share relevant stories that you’ve experienced that showcase problem-solving or teamwork. You can use the STAR technique.
- Ask ‘what does success look like in this role?’ It positions you as future-focused and helps gauge expectations.
- Mirror body language: Subtly matching the interviewer’s posture can create rapport, even when it’s a live video interview.
- Keep answers concise and impactful. Overexplaining or waffling will lose the interviewer’s interest.
Don’ts:
- Don’t assume that the interviewer remembers you from your application.
- Don’t speak negatively about past employers or people you’ve worked with (even subtly): It reflects poorly on you, no matter how justified.
- Don’t lie, it’s not worth losing a job offer over saying you have done or have something when you haven’t. Remember, that could be construed as gross misconduct.
- Don’t avoid discussing gaps: Be honest about career breaks or transitions, and highlight what you gained from those experiences.
